چکیده

Experience with systemic heparinization during cardiac catheterization by brachial arteriotomy has been investigated by a prospective study. In 253 catheterizations no complications attributable to heparinization occurred. The incidence of impaired (2 4%) and absent (i *6%) radial pulses after catheterization was lower than in some series. The majority ofcomplications were related to local trauma at the site ofcatheter introduction and were related to the type of catheter used. The incidence of post-catheterization occlusion requiring thrombectomy was significantly lowerfor those with systemic heparinization thanfor those where heparin was omitted or reversed, though the numbers involved were small. We conclude that systemic heparinization is a useful and safe technique during cardiac catheterization and can help to reduce the incidence of local thrombosis.

Iatrogenic brachial artery injuries.

During a 7-year period approximately 700 left heart cardiac catheterizations were carried out via open brachial arteriotomy. Of these, 25 patients with a missing or weak radial pulse after catheterization were referred for operation. Despite minimal early ischaemic symptoms and signs, all 25 patients had a complete occlusion of the brachial artery at the site of the arteriotomy. Commonest cause...

Complications of cardiac catheterization of neonates, infants, and children. A three-year study.

In order to assess the influence of recent modifications in cardiac catheterization technique and patient management, a prospective study of all complications in a series of 1160 cardiac catheterizations of neonates, infants, and children was performed. Thirty-four major and 136 minor complications were recorded. Fatal complications were rare in all age groups (0.26%); however, postcatheterizat...

Clinical Sequelae from Arterial Needle

A study of 3,193 arterial entries of various types disclosed 66 major complications and 321 minor complications for a total complication rate of 13%. The Seldinger technique of percutaneous arterial catheterization was followed by the highest incidence of complications, the percutaneous needle puncture method was associated with an intermediate complication rate, and the cutdown arteriotomy wit...

Infection control guidelines for the cardiac catheterization laboratory: society guidelines revisited.

In the early years of diagnostic cardiac catheterization, strict sterile precautions were required for cutdown procedures. Thirteen years ago, when the original guidelines were written, the brachial arteriotomy was still frequently utilized, femoral closure devices were uncommon, "implantables," such as intracoronary stents and PFO/ASD closure devices, were in their infancy, and percutaneous va...

Predictors of Brachial Artery Spasm during Transradial Cardiac Catheterization

Background: Brachial artery spasms may occur during transradial cardiac catheterization. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between brachial artery spasms after transradial cardiac catheterization and coronary artery disease. Methods: Two hundred and forty-one patients who received transradial cardiac catheterization for diagnosis of coronary artery disease were enrolled ...
